Fish to the City is an original painting by artist Vicky Naranjo, created with a mixed-media technique, watercolor on recycled paper made with coffee, by Costa Rican artist: Lil Mena. It’s a mix of intense color, gold texturing, and a naïve style that brings together architecture, wildlife, and flora within a single composition.
In this piece, the little fish represent human beings swimming toward a big city, leaving behind the color of the sea to draw closer to the gray of concrete. They also echo the coati trying to cross the pavement between cars, or the monkey clinging to power lines: all the creatures whose natural home has been transformed into cement.
We have built our cities on what was once home to thousands of species, ourselves included. Every day there are fewer trees and more concrete. This painting is an invitation to pause and ask: how disconnected are we from nature while we sustain our material lives? What would we be willing to do to bring a little nature back into the city?
For Vicky Naranjo, painting is how she transforms what she feels into color. In the hardest moments of her life, when everything seemed lost, one thought always kept her going: I still have my art. Every piece is born from that certainty and becomes a way of processing the human experience and sharing it with whoever is looking.
