“Life is a Boat Ride” is a deeply intimate work created during and after the passing of my father—a moment that transformed not only my life, but also the way I understand time, presence, and the beauty of simply being.
At the center of the composition, a solitary boat glides across luminous waters, illuminated by a radiant sun that feels both like a beginning and an ending. The sail, divided into fragments of color and pattern, reflects the layered nature of our journey—moments of clarity, confusion, strength, and surrender, all coexisting within us.
Surrounding the boat, an ecosystem of organic forms unfolds. Fish-like figures, abstract yet alive, move through a vibrant sea of greens, blues, and electric yellows. These beings feel symbolic—like souls, memories, or passing thoughts—each one carrying its own language of lines, textures, and markings. They accompany the boat without interfering, as if witnessing the journey from different dimensions of existence.
The background pulses with movement. The energetic strokes and flowing patterns evoke the rhythm of water, but also the invisible currents of life itself—the forces that carry us forward whether we are ready or not. There is both chaos and harmony here, echoing the emotional landscape of grief: disorienting, yet strangely beautiful.
This painting speaks about the uncertainty of how long our journey will be. Some lives, like some voyages, are brief—interrupted before reaching what we imagine as their destination. Others are allowed to unfold more fully, gifting us sunsets, moonlit nights, ocean breezes, and moments of profound connection.
Despite its origin in loss, this piece is ultimately an offering of acceptance and wonder. It invites us to trust the movement of life, to honor every phase of the journey, and to remain open to beauty—even when we are navigating the unknown.
“Life is a Boat Ride” reminds us that we are all travelers. We do not choose when the journey begins or ends—but we can choose how deeply we experience the ride.
